New – Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) was Professor of Geology at Cambridge from 1818, and in 1819 helped to found the Cambridge Philosophical Society. The ‘Discourse’ at the heart of this book first appeared in 1833. In it he urged students to develop their characters in this ‘place of sound learning and Christian education’. He describes the subjects studied in the university – the ‘laws of nature’, ancient literature and language, and ethics and metaphysics – and their purpose in the service of God

It provides a fascinating overview of a period of scientific revolution for historians of science and education.

 A Natural History of Time

A Natural History of Time

$17.84

The quest to pinpoint the age of the Earth is nearly as old as humanity itself. For most of history, people trusted mythology or religion to provide the answer, even though nature abounds with clues to the past of the Earth and the stars. In A Natural History of Time, geophysicist Pascal Richet tells the fascinating story of how scientists and philosophers examined those clues and from them built a chronological scale that has made it possible to reconstruct the history of nature itself. Richet begins his story with mythological traditions, which were heavily influenced by the seasons and almost uniformly viewed time cyclically. The linear history promulgated by Judaism, with its story of creation, was an exception, and it was that tradition that drove early Christian attempts to date the Earth. For instance, in 169 CE, the bishop of Antioch, for instance declared that the world had been in existence for 5,698 years and the odd months and days. Until the mid-eighteenth century, such natural timescales derived from biblical chronologies prevailed, but, Richet demonstrates, with the Scientific Revolution geological and astronomical evidence for much longer timescales began to accumulate. Fossils and the developing science of geology provided compelling evidence for periods of millions and millions of years–a scale that even scientists had difficulty grasping. By the end of the twentieth century, new tools such as radiometric dating had demonstrated that the solar system is four and a half billion years old, and the universe itself about twice that, though controversial questions remain. The quest for time is a story of ingenuity and determination, and like a geologist, Pascal Richet carefully peels back the strata of that history, giving us a chance to marvel at each layer and truly appreciate how far our knowledge–and our planet–have come.

Angelic Wisdom Concerning Divine Love and Wisdom

Angelic Wisdom Concerning Divine Love and Wisdom

$9.89

The atmospheres, which are called aethers and airs, are alike in both the spiritual and natural worlds, only that those in the spiritual world are spiritual, and those in the natural world are natural. The former are spiritual because they exist from the sun, which is the first proceeding of the divine love and divine wisdom of the Lord, and from Him receive in them divine fire which is love, and divine light which is wisdom…-from “Part III” Emanuel Swedenborg, an 18th-century inventor and man of science, experienced a spiritual epiphany at the age of 56, when he began to explore Christianity from a mystic standpoint, a stunning change of heart that has since intrigued and fascinated generations of rationalists and philosophers, from Immanuel Kant to Arthur Conan Doyle to C.G. Jung. Did Swedenborg go mad, or is he a genuine prophet? Divine Love and Wisdom, first published in 1763, remains one of Swedenborg’s most popular works, his discussion of the Creation of the universe and humanity; it forms the basis of his metaphysics and is an essential foundation for appreciating his other works. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Swedenborg’s The Spiritual Life and The Word of God. Swedish scientist and philosopher EMANUEL SWEDENBORG (1688-1772) made notable contributions in the fields of biology, geology, and astronomy before embarking upon his theological commentary. His religious writings include The Apocalypse Revealed, The True Christian Religion, and The Last Judgment.

Christian Leopold Freiherr von Buch (April 26, 1774 – March 4, 1853) was a German geologist and paleontologist born in Stolpe an der Oder (now a part of Angermünde, Brandenburg) and is remembered as one of the most important contributors to geology in the first half of the nineteenth century. He studied together with Alexander von Humboldt under Abraham Gottlob Werner and travelled widely afterwards. His scientific interest was devoted to a broad spectrum of geological topics: volcanism, fossils, stratigraphy and more. His most remembered accomplishment is the scientific definition of the jurassic system. He died in Berlin. In 1815, he visited the Canary Islands. During his time in the Canary Islands, he visited the Las Cañadas Caldera on Tenerife and the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma. When he published his memoirs and observations about his excursion, he introduced the Spanish word “Caldera” for “Bowl” into the geological and scientific vocabulary. In 1825, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Recipient of the Blue Max. Elected as the first foreign member of the Geological Society of London.

Excerpt: The Bass Rock , or simply The Bass , (pronounced /bæs/ , rhyming with “mass” rather than “mace”), is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland . It is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) offshore, and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north-west of North Berwick . It is a steep-sided volcanic rock, 107 metres (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a large colony of gannets . The rock is currently uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and later was the site of an important castle, which was, after the Commonwealth, used as a prison. The island was in the ownership of the Lauder family for almost six centuries, and now belongs to Sir Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple. A lighthouse was constructed on the rock in 1902, and the remains of a chapel are located there. The Bass Rock features in numerous works of fiction, including Robert Stevenson ‘s Catriona .Geography and geology The Bass Rock from North Berwick Bass Rock relative to North Berwick , from North Berwick LawThe island is “a volcanic plug of phonolite “, dating to the Carboniferous period. Hugh Miller (1802-1856) was a self-taught Scottish geologist and writer, folklorist and an evangelical Christian. At 17 he was apprenticed to a stonemason, and his work in quarries, together with walks along the local shoreline, led him to the study of geology. In 1829, he published a volume of poems, and soon afterwards became involved in political and religious controversies. In 1834, he became accountant in one of the local banks, and in the next year brought out his Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland. In 1840, the popular party in the Church, with which he had been associated, started a newspaper, The Witness, and Miller was called to be editor in Edinburgh. Amongst his other works are First Impressions of England and its People (1847), My Schools and Schoolmasters; or, The Story of My Education (1854), The Cruise of the Betsey (1857), Tales and Sketches (1863) and Leading Articles on Various Subjects (1870).
