Christian Identity

What is the “Christian Identity Movement”?
Just wanting to know.
Seems to be a horrifying group of nutjobs. From what I’ve found, they use religion to justify violent racism and include groups like the KKK and the Aryan Nation.

People of the Book: Christian Identity and Literary Culture $36 “In this book David Lyle Jeffrey seeks to characterize illustratively the historical commitment of Christianity to the literacy and literature of Western culture. Against postmodernist tendencies to deride the historical commitment to meaning in Western art and literature as a regressive “logocentrism,” Jeffrey argues that the biblical tradition-the cultural and literary identity forged among Western Christians by virtue of being a “People of the Book”-has in fact given rise to Western literacy. Jeffrey looks at the Christian “grand narrative” as it is reflected in Western literature, making apt use of the visual arts by incorporating a series of twenty-eight black-and-white illustrations that enrich and fortify the story it tells.” |

Paul and the Creation of Christian Identity $110 Paul is traditionally viewed as separating from the churches of Peter and of Jewish Christ-followers to promote his own mission, eventually triumphing in the creation of a church with a gentile identity. In Paul and the Creation of Christian Identity , Campbell argues that the Pauline mission represents only one strand of the Christ-movement that should not be universalized to signify the whole. In conjunction with his gentile mission, Paul acknowledges Jewish identity as an abiding reality, rather than as a temporary, weak form of faith in Christ. Paul’s gentile mission was not a reaction to his Jewish heritage, but a transformation based on his vision of Christ: thus the identity of Christianity cannot be that of a new religion. |

The Identity of Christian Morality $89.95 This book argues that moral theology has yet to embrace the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council concerning the ways in which moral theology is to be renewed. There is little or no consensus between theologians regarding the nature, content and uniqueness of Christian morality. After highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the so-called autonomy and faith ethic schools of thought, Mealey argues that there is little dividing them and that, in some instances, both schools are simply defending one aspect of a hermeneutical dialectic. In an attempt to move away from the divisions between proponents of the faith-ethic and autonomy positions, Mealey enlists the help of the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur, arguing that the debate on the uniqueness of Christian morality can be mediated if scholars look to the possibilities opened up by Ricoeur's hermeneutics of interpretation. Mealey also argues that the uniqueness of Christian morality is more adequately explained in terms of a specific identity (self) that is constantly subject to change and revision in light of many, often conflicting, moral sources. She advocates a move away from attempts to explain the uniqueness of Christian morality in terms of one specific, unchanging context, motivation, norm or divine command or value. By embracing the possibilities opened up by Ricoeurian hermeneutics, Mealey explains how concepts such as revelation, tradition, orthodoxy and moral conscience may be understood in a hermeneutical way without being deemed sectarian or unorthodox. |

Personal Identity in Theological Perspective $20 “The turbulence and confusion of contemporary life should motivate us to ask the big questions of life anew and to reexamine the disastrous naturalism of the twentieth century. This volume gathers well-known thinkers from a breadth of confessional Christian traditions who share a passionate interest in better understanding the nature of persons. The contributors to Personal Identity in Theological Perspective aim to recover the ancient biblical account of human beings as made “in the image of God.” Their essays fall naturally into three divisions – retrieving historical discussions of human identity, presenting contemporary challenges to a distinctively Christian anthropology, and offering constructive proposals toward a richer understanding of persons. This volume will provoke discussion and debate on the fundamental question What does it mean to be human? Contributors: Stanley J. Grenz Michael S. Horton Stanton L. Jones David H. Kelsey Richard Lints Nancey Murphy Mark R. Talbot William C. Weinrich Robert Louis Wilken Mark A. Yarhouse” |

Castrating Culture: A Christian Perspective on Ethnic Identity from the Margins $13.99 “What does it mean to have an ethnic heritage that is in any way different from that of the prevailing, dominant culture? And how do we save cultural diversity from being swallowed up by Anglo-American sameness? Too often, Christians associate the God-given gift of ethnic identity with the evils of ethnic cleansing, genocide, hatred, or cruelty. Instead they need to see the richness of unity in diversity as modeled for them by their Trinitarian God. Hughes develops his argument from his own rich and sometimes painful experiences, as well as from biblical truth, historical and present social, cultural, and political reality. Ethnic identity is not the cause of violent conflict but rather a gift from our creative God that needs to be preserved and nurtured.Powerful ethnic identities have, and continue, to castrate cultures by not allowing them to pass on to future generations the richness of their heritage. Hughes argues that as Christians, we need to have a positive understanding of ethnic identity.” |

Restoring Sexual Identity $12.99 “Can a lesbian change? Yes says author Anne Paulk, who left her lesbian lifestyle twenty years ago as she responded to Christ’s invitation to an abundant life.”Very early, I felt the tug of sexual attraction toward some members of my gender. I remember being both confused and excited by these feelings. After many years of having been attracted to other women, I embraced a lesbian identity and lifestyle. Later, after an encounter with God, I began my journey out of homosexuality. . .” Restoring Sexual Identity offers answers to the difficult and often wrenching questions asked by both women desiring change and by friends and relatives of women struggling with same sex attraction. * Is lesbianism a genetic predisposition or is it developed during childhood? * Does becoming a Christian immediately eliminate all desire for members of the same sex? * Can a woman be a lesbian and a Christian at the same time? * How does childhood sexual abuse relate to the development of lesbianism?* What support is available for women who struggle with lesbianism? For every woman sexually attracted to other women, here’s another choice.” |

The Old Testament and the Significance of Jesus: Embracing Change–Maintaining Christian Identity: T $22 “A perennial question throughout the history of the Christian faith has centered on the character of the Old Testament and its relationship to Jesus Christ. It is in this area that Christians and Jews have parted ways, creating a deep and enduring chasm between the two faith communities. With this new volume, Fredrick Holmgren aids in closing this hurtful breach by engaging with views on both sides of this important conversation. Holmgren dialogues with Christians from every point on the theological spectrum, urging the church to a new respect for the Jewish Bible, the enduring role of the Old Testament as “Christian scripture, ” and the valuable contributions of Judaism to the Christian faith. Warning the church against either caricaturing the Old Testament and Judaism or romanticizing Christianity, Holmgren sensitively shows that the New Testament proclamation of newness in Christ carries forward the witness of the Old Testament without making obsolete its Jewish interpretation.” |

Christian Assembly $17 “What is “church”? What makes the church one? While these questions may seem innocuous, church has become conflicted territory recently, with internal factions, external pressures, and ecumenical turmoil all calling for a more positive, studier, more resilient notion of Christian community. Wengert approaches the questions as a Reformation historian. He shows how the New Testament notion of “marks” of the church was taken up by Luther and developed by Melanchthon not as descriptive tag but as a criterion for authenticity in Christian community. Lathrop, the liturgical theologian, shows concretely how those marks can stamp the worship life of a congregation as well as the evaluative work of congregations with their pastors, bishops, superintendents, and conference ministers. Only with a sturdy sense of their own identity–as a holy people, grounded in common practices and commitments–can Christian assemblies truly engage and even transform today’s cultural context. This volume originated as six lectures jointly presented to the Academy of Bishops of the ELCA in 2001.” |

Identity: Who You Are in Christ $16.99 “In Nazi concentration camps, the will of Jewish prisoners was broken by stripping away their personal identification and giving them just a number rather than a name. How did the earliest followers of Jesus understand their experiences, behaviors, and suffering? These questions and more are addressed in this stimulating work by one of the most productive Continental New Testament scholars. Rather than approaching the New Testament with a Freudian, Jungian, or other modern psychological theory, Berger illuminates historically how peoples of the first century described their human experiences in relation to their encounters with God, Christ, demons, and the power of their own desires and will.” |

Conflict and Identity in Romans $32 “What is the purpose of Paul’s letter to the Romans? Esler provides an illuminating analysis of this epistle, employing social-scientific methods along with epigraphy and archaeology. God of Israel and Christian Th $20 “With acknowledgment that Christian theology contributed to the persecution and genocide of Jews comes a dilemma: how to excise the cancer without killing the patient? Kendall Soulen shows how important Christian assertions-the uniqueness of Jesus, the Christian covenant, the finality of salvation in Christ-have been formulated in destructive, supersessionist ways not only in the classical period (Justin Martyr, Irenaeus) and early modernity (Kant and Schleiermacher) but even contemporary theology (Barth and Rahner). Along with this first full-scale critique of Christian supersessionism, Soulen’s own constructive proposal regraps the narrative unity of Christian identity and the canon through an original and important insight into the divine-human covenant, the election of Israel, and the meaning of history.” |

A Drizzle of Honey $169.48 Forced to convert to Catholicism during the Inquisition, many Jews in Spain kept alive their culture and identity in secret. Their food traditions, which combined the Christian and Islamic traditions, have been recreated in these recipes, which are mingled with stories about the people who created them. Line drawings throughout. From the Publisher When Iberian Jews were converted to Catholicism under duress during the Inquisition, many struggled to retain their Jewish identity in private while projecting Christian conformity in the public sphere. To root out these heretics, the courts of the Inquisition published checklists of koshering practices and grilled the servants, neighbors, and even the children of those suspected of practicing their religion at home. From these testimonies and other primary sources, Gitlitz and Davidson have drawn a fascinating picture of this precarious sense of Jewish identity and have re-created these recipes, which combine Christian & Islamic traditions in cooking meats, fish and varied vegetables, and use seasonings such as saffron, ginger and cinnamon. The recipes, and the accompanying stories of the people who created them, promise to delight the adventurous palate and give insights into the foundations of modern Sephardic cuisine. |

A Radical Jew $26.95 A splendid piece of work: learned, witty, wide-ranging in its understanding of religion as a cultural phenomenon, passionate in its concern for the ethical implications of our reading of ancient texts. –Richard B. Hays, author of Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul Boyarin’s bracing argument turns us into strangers to ourselves, as the first century comes uncannily close to the twenty-first century. The importance of this stimulating and controversial book lies in promoting an awareness of the possibilities of solidarity, justice, and liberation in the time of the culture wars. –Homi K. Bhabha, author of The Location of Culture Brilliant, thought-provoking and outrageous (a compliment in my lexicon). Demonstrates very clearly the merits of a Jewish look at Paul (that is, a Jew looking at Paul in his Jewishness). –Adele Reinhartz, McMaster University Boyarin has mastered the literature of Paul in amazing detail and devastating understanding. His analytic skills are honed to perfection on the stone of critical theory. As a Jewish reader of a foundational Christian text, he has explained to Christians the power of Paul’s thinking for Christians. –Burton L. Mack, author of Myth of Innocence: Mark and Christian Origins This book is a polemic for difference based on genealogical memory as a creative force in the broadest human solidarity. In that sense it is a moral or philosophical tractate, what Boyarin calls cultural criticism, as well as an analysis of Paul’s position. I have been greatly informed by a reading of this study. –Antoinette Wire, author of The Corinthian Woman Prophets Boyarin weighs in with his usual eclat . . . reading the Epistles as if theywere contributions to contemporary debates over the issues of feminism, multiculturalism, Zionism, identity politics, and deconstruction, and reading these as if they were germane to an understanding of the Epistles. The book is a tour de force of PoMo criticism, and required reading |
