God and Marriage $14 “”Far too many people, Christians not excluded, are self-centeredly preoccupied with their own marital problems and their attempt to engineer solutions to them. A theology of marriage can help them to achieve a God-centered look at the larger situation of which their marriages constitute a small, if by no means unimportant, part. In the long run a few look means a new understanding, and a new understanding means a new practice.” – Geoffrey Bromiley Offering a new look at the increasingly unfashionable institution of marriage, Geoffrey Bromiley presents here a timely theological study which, unlike others books on marriage, aims exclusively to relate marriage to God as Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit. Bromiley observes that God’s work on reconciliation makes it possible for his people also to achieve reconciliation with one another, particularly in the marriage relationship. In addition to thoroughly discussing the relationship of the Trinity to marriage, Bromiley examines such topics as incest, adultery and fornication, celibacy, the permanency of marriage, and remarriage after the death of a partner. “Dr. Bromiley pays close, cautious, and sensitive attention to virtually every Scriptural passage about marriage, even the passages that are particularly difficult for our own era to cope with. He makes no attempt to rewrite the Bible in the interest of some specially modern idea. It is a book rooted deeply in the immeasurable principles of Creation and Redemption, and is full of sane, courageous, sound teaching.” – Thomas Howard Gordon College “I am very pleased with the book and feel it will fill a very special place in the available literature on Christian marriage. . . . It stands apartfrom the superficial writing that all but characterizes our time. How-to books are of little value apart from the basic theological understanding which must precede them. This is a book I would like to have written, and a book which will be required reading for my students.” – Dwight Small Westmont College Geoffrey W. Bromiley is professor emeritus of Church History and Historical Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He is best known as the translator of numerous theological books, including the 9-volume Theological Dictionary of the New Testament.” |

But what about those marriages committed “’til death do us part” and yet are going through a period of time when one spouse is carrying the burden? What happens to a woman when marriage gets heavy and she gets weary? Often, when a woman ends up carrying the weight of the marriage (due to her husband’s health, choices, workload, etc.), her tendency is to “get out or check out.” She may consider her husband’s distraction an opportunity to do her own thing. But is there a better way to walk through this season? Even thrive? Susie Larson stands in as an encouraging friend, walking with you, helping you to discern how anxiety and anger will slow you down; and how loneliness and disappointment can actually refine and bless you. You will be challenged and inspired as you wrap your arms around this time and remember that God has His arms around you.” |

Lasting Marriage: The Owners’ Manual $11.99 “Lasting Marriage is based on the premise that relationships need the same kind of care and maintenance we give any other valued possession, such as a motor vehicle. While we naturally assume our cars will require more, not less, care as they age, we have often not applied that same reasoning to marriage. This manual looks at premarital preparation, relationship maintenance, and sustaining a healthy marriage during the child-rearing years. Harvey Yoder emphasizes areas of relationship maintenance often ignored in other similar books. These include the importance of a solid support network of friends, family, and congregational family; and the need to take seriously Jesus? teaching about a joyful and simple lifestyle.” |

Marriage – Just a Piece of Paper? $35 “”Almost everyone aspires to marriage something these books go to some lengths to explain, albeit in completely different ways. As the title suggests, I Like Being Married is an unabashed celebration of marriage; it’s fluff but enjoyable fluff. Leach, executive director of Orbis Books, and Borchard, author of the children’s book series “The Emerald Bible Collection,” have collected bits and pieces quotes, stories, traditions, and even top-ten lists that show why people take pleasure in matrimony. The quotes and stories come from both celebrities (e.g., George Bush, Winston Churchill, Celine Dion, Natasha Richardson, C.S. Lewis, and Mel Gibson) and regular Joe and Jane Does. Charming and well edited, it contains just enough variety in length and subject to be interesting, yet it is also cohesive. Public libraries should purchase. The companion book to a PBS documentary that aired Feb. 14, Marriage Just a Piece of Paper? is far more serious in tone and scope. Although it is also a smartly chosen m lange of quotes from different people, it focuses on the societal changes that have led to increased divorce rates, cohabitation, and single motherhood despite the beneficial aspects of marriage. Sociologists, politicians, ministers, and the occasional person on the street are all given a chance to explain whether they think marriage especially as it relates to the raising of children is in decline and, if so, what might be done to stop that decline. Editors Anderson and Brian Boyer worked on the documentary as managing editor/producer and executive producer/ director, respectively, and Don Browning is a professor of ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Given that the effects ofdivorce on children is a major topic (see, e.g., Judith Wallerstein and others’ The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce and E. Mavis Hetherington and John Kelly’s For Better or for Worse) and that many patrons probably watched the PBS special…” – Library Journal” |

Christian Marriage: The New Challenge $14.95 “Couples who marry today enter into a relationship that is in many ways more challenging than it was a generation or two ago. The social institution of marriage has experienced almost cataclysmic change. The very foundations of marriage are often questioned. Yet Christian marriage, David Thomas insists, retains a power to transform and sanctify lives. Thomas presents in this second edition of Christian Marriage the same view as he did in his first book: a positive view of Christian marriage grounded in sacramental living. Yet this edition is entirely new as Thomas reflects on how current theological, cultural, and economic perspectives influence and inform Christian marriage. Thus A Journey Together (the subtitle of the earlier edition) becomes The New Challenge. And readers enter with Thomas into a discussion of contemporary concerns such as intimacy and sexuality, gender equality and relational spirituality, and parenting with hope in a world of unknowns. Facing these challenges of marriage, Christian couples will discover ways to meet the “one great challenge: to love each other as Christ Jesus has and continues to love us.”" |

10 mentiras que los hombres creen / 10 Lies That Men Believe $10.99 10 mentiras que los hombres creen is a compassionate but confrontational look at the reasons why so many Christian men today are in serious crisis. The author, who has spent eight years confronting the abuse of women in more than twenty countries, believes men are failing in marriage, fatherhood, friendships and careers because of ten wrong mindsets inherited from culture. In order for men to rise above such problems as pride, insecurity, divorce, sexual immorality and emotional dysfunction, they must renounce the lies of culture and embrace the truth of God”s Word–which has the power to renew our minds (Romans 12:2). With gut-level honesty, the author offers practical answers for men who struggle with a variety of issues including addiction, abusive tendencies, pornography, controlling behavior, and emotional problems rooted in a lack of proper fathering. The book is also an excellent resource for women who are suffering because of mistreatment by the men in their lives. |

Excerpt: The Augsburg Confession , also known as the “Augustana” from its Latin name, Confessio Augustana, is the primary confession of faith of the Lutheran Church and one of the most important documents of the Lutheran reformation . The Augsburg Confession was written in both German and Latin , and was presented by a number of German rulers and free-cities at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V had called on the Princes and Free Territories in Germany to explain their religious convictions in an attempt to restore religious and political unity in the Holy Roman Empire, and rally support against the Turkish invasion. It is the fourth document contained in the Lutheran Book of Concord .Background Diet of Augsburg by Christian Beyer. On January 21, 1530, the Emperor Charles V issued letters from Bologna , inviting the German diet to meet in Augsburg April 8, for the purpose of discussing and deciding various important questions. Although the writ of invitation was couched in very peaceful language, it was received with suspicion by some of the Evangelicals. The far-seeing Landgrave of Hesse hesitated to attend the diet, but the Elector John of Saxony , who received the writ March 11, on March 14 directed Martin Luther , Justus Jonas , Johannes Bugenhagen , and Philipp Melanchthon to meet in Torgau , where he was, and present a summary of the Lutheran faith, to be laid before the emperor at the diet. This summary has received the name of the “Torgau Articles”. On April 3 the elector and reformers started from Torgau and reached Coburg on April 23. There Luther was left behind because he was an outlaw according to the Diet of Worms . The rest reached Augsburg May 2. On the journey Melanchthon worked on an “apology”, using the Torgau articles, and sent |

Anna (Hebrew : , Ancient Greek : ) or Anna the Prophetess was a biblical figure mentioned only in the Gospel of Luke . According to that Gospel, she was an aged Jewish prophetess who prophesied about Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem . She appears in Luke 2:36-38 in the episode of the presentation of Jesus at the Temple . While Luke gave some elements, Anna’s life and background are obscure. From the three verses in Luke, the following is known of Anna: Age Luke describes Anna as “very old.” Many Bibles and older commentaries state that she was 84 years old. Modern translations, such as the NIV , ESV , CEV , and NLT , add a footnote indicating that another interpretation is possible. 9th-Century Christian Clergy $9.43 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Anastasius Bibliothecarius, Gottschalk of Orbais, Fedelmid Mac Crimthainn, Diarmait of Iona, Adalard of Corbie, Florus of Lyon, Odo of Glanfeuil, Ailbhe of Ceann Mhara, Louis, Hugh, Son of Charlemagne. Excerpt: Anastasius Bibliothecarius (c. 810-c. 878) was Head of archives (bibliothecarius, literally “librarian”) and antipope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was a nephew of Bishop Arsenius of Orte, who executed important commissions as Papal legate. Anastasius learned the Greek language from Eastern Roman monks and obtained an unusual education for his era, such that he appears to be the most learned ecclesiastic of Rome in the barbaric period of the 9th century. During the pontificate of pope Nicholas I (855-867) Anastasius was abbot of Santa Maria in Trastevere on the farther side of the Tiber. Among other matters, he was employed by the pope as secretary and he has been shown by Ernst Perels to be the ‘ghost-writer’ behind much papal official correspondence of these years. He was also active as an author, and translated Greek language works into Latin. Among them was the biography of St. John the Merciful, which he dedicated to Nicholas I. The successor of Nicholas, Pope Adrian II (867-872), appointed Anastasius bibliothecarius (Head of archives) of the Roman Church, an important office at the Lateran Palace that gave him further influence at the papal Court. In 869 he was sent by Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor as envoy to Constantinople, with two men of high rank in the Frankish Empire, to negotiate a marriage between Leo VI the Wise, oldest son of the Byzantine emperor Basil I, and Louis’s only child, Ermengard. When the envoys arrived at Constantinople, the Fourth Council of Constantinople was still in session, and Anastasius, who atte… More: |

A 21st Century Rationalist In Medieval America $13.66 What if a fed-up American atheist and “godless liberal” became a newspaper opinion columnist? This unique compilation answers that question, and demonstrates how an unapologetically secular perspective can go mainstream, reminding non-believers they’re not alone, while simultaneously reaching a largely Christian audience. Exploring the power of “preaching to the converted,” this motivating collection challenges other atheists, secularists, agnostics, and freethinkers to become vocal and involved in their own local media, adding a rational voice to the daily dialogue taking place in newspapers across the country. This revised and expanded edition of “A 21st Century Rationalist in Medieval America” is a collection of newspaper opinion columns, and other essays, written between 2002 and 2008. The subject matter includes: American politics, the media, religion, atheism, evolution and creationism, the Bush administration, science education, free will, gay marriage, religious conservatives, the Bible, morality, and the Iraq war. |

A Beautiful Mess: A Perfectionist’s Journey Through Self-care $15.99 In a society obsessed with perfection, it is no wonder so many women – especially Christian women – are breaking beneath the burden of expectation. With airbrushed cover models and “reality TV” blaring in stereo sound, it is no wonder women are abusing themselves, literally, to maintain the perception of perfection. If you are exhausted from trying to keep it all together or feel anxious at the thought of someone “finding you out” and calling you a fraud; if you are at the breaking point from meeting the demands of everyone else and always putting yourself last or simply beating yourself up because of your imperfections – this book was written for you.In her debut book, Kristin Ritzau shares her very personal journey to overcome crippling perfectionism. As she navigated a new marriage, endured a quarter-life health crisis, and was forced to redefine the God of her childhood, Ritzau discovered freedom in accepting she was a beautiful mess. She didn’t need to clean up her “perfect” life any longer. It was only through examining the emotional, mental, physical, sexual and spiritual facets of herself, that she experienced the Holy Spirit’s healing: acceptance, contentment and rest. “A Beautiful Mess” will help readers do the same by introducing practices such as contemplative prayer, art journaling, and “playing in your body” while demystifying the self-care journey. The best part of Ritzau’s story is that she is sharing it – to help other women heal and discover their own beautiful mess. |
