A Christian's Pocket Guide to the Japanese

A Christian’s Pocket Guide to the Japanese

$4.99

“Globalisation means that increasingly we meet people from a wider variety of nations and cultures. The manufacturing revolution that has seen Japan become one of the top industrialised nations in the world means that more Japanese people are travelling abroad and more people are travelling to Japan. What should Christians know about the Japanese? That question is answered by this book. A Christians Pocket Guide to the Japanese firstly looks at the history, culture and religions common in Japan and their attitude to Christianity. Secondly, it gives guidance on how to befriend Japanese people (including a lifesaving Dos and Donts section) and thirdly how best to talk to them about Christianity itself. There are also useful appendices with suggested further reading and how to lead a Bible study. If you meet people from Japan at work, school or socially or if you travel to Japan then this is an invaluable book.”

Traditional Japanese Music and Musical Instruments

Traditional Japanese Music and Musical Instruments

$48.98

When William Malm published his wide-ranging study of traditional Japanese music in 1959, it was the first time in the twentieth century that such a work had been brought out in a Western language. Malm’s book has still not been replaced as the single most interesting and authoritative text on the subject. But until now it was never revised or updated, nor were its illustrations ever changed. With the present publication, however, an extensively improved edition that includes a CD of sample music has been made available. Professor Malm’s aim has always been to attract the layman reader as well as the musicologist, which has given this book its strength and durability. The writing is clear, lively, and informed, the scope of his study being broadened by frequent comparisons with other traditions, East and West. Accompanying it all is a generous number of drawings and photographs of the players and their various instruments. The book opens with a brisk and eloquent history of Japan’s musical life, then moves on to its religious music, Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian; its court music; the music of the noh drama; and the music of specific instruments: biwa, shakuhachi, koto, and shamisen. After examining the components of kabuki music, it closes with a chapter on folk music, popular musical arts, and the music of other ethnic groups in Japan. For the more technically inclined, there is a detailed appendix on notation systems. Lastly, to put all this in a practical context, a CD is provided, giving nineteen examples of these different genres. Whether your interest is in a particular form of Japanese music-the marvelous sonority of the bamboo flute, the sharp but wistful sound of the shamisen-or just in music in general, Malm’s book will more than satisfy your curiosity.

Music in Early Christian Literature

Music in Early Christian Literature

$44

“This book provides a collection of some 400 passages on music from early Christian literature – New Testament to c. 450 AD – newly translated from the original Greek, Latin, and Syriac. As there are no musical sources of the period, music historians must rely upon remarks about music in literary sources to gain some knowledge of early Christian liturgical music. This volume makes a large and representative collection of the material conveniently available. The passages are arranged chronologically and regionally in eleven chapters with brief commentary. An introduction sets out the major subjects and themes of the original source material.”

III [Japanese Bonus Tracks]

III [Japanese Bonus Tracks]

$39.99

If the powerful yet slick AOR of Giant’s first two albums — 1989′s Last of the Runaways and 1992′s Time to Burn — had already seemed stylistically out of step with the times (hence their resounding commercial failure), then the group’s next studio effort, 2001′s III, would, by rights, have to sound positively prehistoric…right? Well, yes according to the whims of pop charts everywhere, but not in the eyes of European label Frontiers, which aggressively courted three of the four original bandmembers until they agreed to reconvene for these recordings, nearly ten years after their breakup. In the interim, vocalist/guitarist Dann Huff, his drumming sibling David Huff, and bassist Mike Brignardello (keyboard player Alan Pasqua did not take part in the reunion) had resumed their prior existence as in-demand session musicians, with the first Huff also stepping behind the mixing desk to produce the odd country artist and, rather infamously, a pair of LPs for thrash metal legends Megadeth. The point of all this background is that all three of the returning musicians were doing just fine in their careers behind the scenes, and therefore had no reason to resurrect the Giant name beyond their love of the music, and a pure desire to rock! And rock they did across most of III’s new tunes (and with virtually no discernible Christian undercurrents to boot), but with the exception of the hard-driving “You Will Be Mine” and Van Halen-esque “The Sky Is the Limit,” Giant rarely showed the same urgency heard on their oftentimes borderline metallic Time to Burn. Instead, groovy mid-paced rockers like “Over You,” “Love Can’t Help You Now,” and “Oh Yeah” cruised along with the studied precision to be expected of lifelong session players, recalling in that sense the technically pristine but also sometime soulless Last of the Runaways. And, at the opposite end of the spectrum, III felt conspicuously “light” (or not “light” enough, as it were) in the power ballad category compared with its two predecessors, with scant examples like “Don’t Leave Me in Love” (memorable, but perhaps too energetic to actually qualify), the half-hearted “It’s Not the End of the World,” and even the exceptionally catchy “Can’t Let Go” ultimately lacking the over the top commitment to maudlin schmaltz that typifies the best and truly timeless AOR tearjerkers. So, at the end of the day (and the album’s conclusion, via a snappy cover of the Robert Palmer hit “Bad Case of Loving You”), III felt like a competent but rather workmanlike production, not quite on par with Giant’s earlier LPs — perhaps because it lacked the desperate hunger and fire that only a true desire to make it could have inspired. Luckily, Giant’s collective songwriting and performing talent was such that even another day at the office was a very good day by most any standards, and that seemed to be more than enough for the die-hard fans who went to the trouble of seeking out this album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Perfor

Why I Left The Contemporary Christian Music Movement

Why I Left The Contemporary Christian Music Movement

$14.99

“Writing from his own personal experience as a former worship leader, Dan Lucarini questions the use of contemporary music in the worship of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and shows why he believes many churches have been deceived into using ever increasing worldly means to ‘reach their lost’. He has seen at first hand how an emphasis on music, and the ultimate move towards rock music in particular, has caused divisions in the church, and turned the emphasis in worship away from the Lord towards ourselves.”

Japanese Popular Music

Japanese Popular Music

$49.48

Japanese popular culture has been steadily increasing in visibility both in Asia and beyond in recent years. This book examines Japanese popular music, exploring its historical development, technology, business and production aspects, audiences, and language and culture. Based both on extensive textual and aural analysis, and on anthropological fieldwork, it provides a wealth of detail, finding differences as well as similarities between the Japanese and Western pop music scenes. Carolyn Stevens shows how Japanese popular music has responded over time to Japan’s relationship to the West in the post-war era, gradually growing in independence from the political and cultural hegemonic presence of America. Similarly, the volume explores the ways in which the Japanese artist has grown in independence vis-a-vis his/her role in the production process, and examines in detail the increasingly important role of the jimusho, or the entertainment management agency, where many individual artists and music industry professionals make decisions about how the product is delivered to the public. It also discusses the connections to Japanese television, film, print and internet, thereby providing through pop music a key to understanding much of Japanese popular culture more widely.

Japanese Music by Michio Miyagi

Japanese Music by Michio Miyagi

$11.98

On some level it just seems wrong to use Western terms to describe Japanese music. Its ethos is completely different, as is the way it uses space and melody. Michio Miyagi was one of the greatest of Japan’s 20th century composers, as well as a performer on koto, jushichigen, and shakuhachi. Although you can hear the influence of the West in his work, its real frame of reference is 19th century Japan. There’s a lovely formality to pieces like “Haru No Umi,” probably his best-known work, and the opener here, lovingly performed. But several of his popular works appear here, such as “Haru No Yo,” which, at almost 13 minutes, effectively stands as an opus. The songs tend to take poems by established poets set to music. There’s plenty of imagery in the music as it evokes, and that’s evident in “Sarashi-fu Tegoto,” which tries to put into music the sounds made by the cloth bleachers in the River Uji. It succeeds beautifully, and you have to wonder whether that’s in part due to the fact that Miyagi was blind and used to processing things in ways that weren’t visual. This forms a wonderful introduction to his work. The performers are largely vehicles for the compositions, and they let it shine through. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi Performers: Kikuko Satoh – Shamisen, Koto; Richard Stagg – Shakuhachi; Yuko Naito – Jushichigen, Koto; Mika Kimula – Soprano (Vocal)

Revealing Masks: Exotic Influences and Ritualized Performance in Modernist Music Theater

Revealing Masks: Exotic Influences and Ritualized Performance in Modernist Music Theater

$63.32

W. Anthony Sheppard considers a wide-ranging constellation of important musical works in this fascinating exploration of ritualized performance in twentieth-century music. Revealing Masks uncovers the range of political, didactic, and aesthetic intents that inspired the creators of modernist music theater. Sheppard is especially interested in the use of the exotic in techniques of masking and stylization, identifying Japanese Noh, medieval Christian drama, and ancient Greek theater as the most prominent exotic models for the creation of total theater. Drawing on an extraordinarily diverse–and in some instances, little-known–range of music theater pieces, Sheppard cites the work of Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Arthur Honegger, Peter Maxwell Davies, Harry Partch, and Leonard Bernstein, as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Madonna. Artists in literature, theater, and dance–such as William Butler Yeats, Paul Claudel, Bertolt Brecht, Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubenstein, and Edward Gordon Craig–also play a significant role in this study.Sheppard poses challenging questions that will interest readers beyond those in the field of music scholarship. For example, what is the effect on the audience and the performers of depersonalizing ritual elements? Does borrowing from foreign cultures inevitably amount to a kind of predatory appropriation? Revealing Masks shows that compositional concerns and cultural themes manifested in music theater are central to the history of twentieth-century Euro-American music, drama, and dance.
