The Colossians
Why is law to be flushed as dung, not touched, tasted, or even handled in Phil 3 & Colossians 2:14, 20-22?
Phil 3:
Paul finally flushed his law as dung
to gain Christ is the end of the law
Col 2
law is against us, not with us;
by the using of laws all perish
perish the thought
Paul is talking about “the law” of the Old Testament – before GRACE came to us through Jesus Christ.
The LAW was full of a lot of rules and regulations, traditions and procedures that the people were to follow to be holy and right with God.
After Jesus came, died, was buried, and resurrected – GRACE came, and it didn’t abolish the ‘law’ but it took our relationship with God from being one of having to ‘perform’/'act’ correctly under the strict ‘performance based’ rules of the law (works), into a more personal relationship with God through Christ. We now have the help of the Holy Spirit to help us do what God asks of us. We are not left on our own to try and ‘perform’ through ‘works’ without grace and the help of the Holy Spirit to help us fulfill all righteousness (i.e. being made right with God).
Paul was saying to stop trying to ‘look’ and ‘appear’ good and holy by doing certain things, such as not eating certain foods, etc… It was just an ‘outward act’ to do such things. God wants us to have his Holy Spirit on the inside, so he can help us do what is good in God’s sight.
We are not to be under the ‘law’ but under ‘grace’ (which is God’s unearned, unmerited favor towards us, through our faith in Jesus Christ).
