Christian Universities

For many students deciding on the right university for the next step in their education can be a very daunting one. There are so many factors to consider; especially as these years are very important as a student grows not only intellectually, but also socially, emotionally, spiritually and so on. When deciding upon a school, many students with an already religious background may opt for a Christian University program. These universities are based on the foundation of producing strong, capable and moral young people, with a sense of duty to God to others.

There are, however, many differences between the Christian Universities as there is with secular schools. There are Jesuit and Catholic schools, large universities, small colleges and various codes of practice when it comes to dress and moral ethics etc. The programs offered within Christian Universities also vary hugely. Some universities may offer a broad range of programs on all sorts of topics while others may specialize in a just a few areas.

The various resources offered are also wide ranging and should be researched thoroughly. There are many different fees charged and it pays consider the various payment options and possible aid that might be available. Other things to look at within Christian universities are the support framework that exists for students on an n academic level and also how much various schools differ in their way of delivering spiritual encouragement, and what they expect from a student in terms of commitment to voluntary work, service duties and mission trips.

A student specifically looking to serve God may choose a Bible College or seminary that focuses on guiding students toward a career in ministry. Then there are Baptist schools that are primarily focused on turning out moral and capable young people that do not separate God from personal, professional or any other part of their lives, whatever their career path. The Catholic schools teach many different subjects down to Islam and Ancient Greece but they are firmly rooted in the deep faith of Catholicism which may be off-putting for secular students or those from a different religion.

So, there are many things to consider when deciding on the right Christian University. Depending on personal preference and how strongly you may want to maintain a decent and moral lifestyle, there are many choices out there.

Christ the Reconciler: A Theology for Opposites, Differences, and Enemies

Christ the Reconciler: A Theology for Opposites, Differences, and Enemies

$20

“After first analyzing the dysfunctional state of America’s churches–with their capitulation to modern culture–Schmiechen argues convincingly that the church can be renewed only through the recovery of Christ’s gospel of reconciliation. “Schmiechen, a United Church of Christ minister, analyzes the internal divisions and the capitulation to modern culture that he believes characterizes the ecumenical Protestant church today and issues a call for a theological reform of the doctrine of the church. Recent attempts to renew the church have been unsuccessful, he claims, because they have not adequately addressed the peculiar dilemma Protestantism is caught in: it stands for individual freedom yet opposes individualistic piety, and it speaks of a social gospel yet fears institutions. In other words, the church is incapable of affirming the faith and order essential for community. For Protestantism to survive, Schmiechen argues, it must reclaim its vision of the gospel as the liberating and unifying power of God. To this end, the author develops a theology of reconciliation based on a theory of atonement he derives from 1 Corinthians and offers a vision of the church in which differences can co-exist and the church can grow in the unity of Christ.” – Publishers Weekly”

Giving Voice to the Silent Pulpit: A Layman Explores the Differences Between Popular and Academic Ch

$14

“In Giving Voice to the Silent Pulpit, author Barry Blood explores the many differences that exist between Popular Christianity, (the doctrine as taught from the pulpit) and Academic Christianity, (the doctrine as taught in our colleges and seminaries). He contends these are startling differences that may shock the average Christian layperson. The author reveals how these differences have created an intellectual gap between the church and our present day worldview of reality, a gap which has contributed to the decline in Christian membership rolls worldwide. He contends that exposing these known doctrinal differences will create a more intellectually honest Christianity, and-he believes-will build a church that can be a more engaging choice for the educated populace of the twenty-first century.”

Becoming Your Spouse’s Better Half: Why Differences Make a Marriage Great

“It’s no secret that men and women are different. And it’s no secret that they don’t always get along because of these differences, even when they love each other. But having a successful marriage is not about finding the perfect person to marry. It’s about loving someone in an unselfish, Christlike manner. Whatever we want out of marriage–unconditional love, forgiveness, passion–that is what we have to give to our spouse. Rick Johnson shows couples how to go beyond merely tolerating each other’s differences to using those God-given differences to add spice and passion to their relationship.”

A Christian and Separated?

A Christian and Separated?

$14.99

“God hates divorce, yet He is not against separation as a temporary measure of mending differences. Experiencing a separation myself, I had first-hand encounters with attitudes, traditions, and misconceived philosophies in the church that bordered on condemnation rather than supporting restoration. A Christian and Separated uncovers these ingrained attitudes and beliefs in an effort to bring guidance, hope and encouragement to suffering marriages. It also urges a transformation of the position many Christians take when encountering a fellow believer struggling with a marital relationship. Although there are a lot of great books on Christian marriage, few come from the author’s personal experience and fewer address the disparaging reaction from Christians towards fellow believers that are struggling with this issue. My prayer is that many will benefit from this work reflecting on my personal recovery experiences from the front seat of the marriage separation and divorce roller coaster. Doug Cook has been a strongly devoted Christian since 1987 and a dedicated and seasoned bible teacher for over 10 years. He has a thorough knowledge of the bible and a vast amount of experience guiding other believers with focus and direction in their specific area of ministry. Doug’s desire to support fellow believers spiritual growth drove him to begin a home church in 2002, which led to the establishment of Emerald Ministries in 2003, a ministry to ministries, focused on assisting other Christian organization with their start up, accounting, business acumen, and more importantly spiritual oversight and accountability. In 2004 he resigned his position at a large corporation to answer God’s call to be infull time ministry. Later the same year he received his assignment from God to be an elder in the body of Christ with a call to a five fold ministry office.”

Dictionary of Christian Spirituality

Dictionary of Christian Spirituality

$39.99

“In recent decades Christian spirituality, spiritual formation and spiritual theology have become important concepts in the global evangelical community. Consequently, an accessible and reliable academic resource is needed on these topics—one that will offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available while still highlighting the distinct heritage and affirming the core grace-centered values of classic evangelical spirituality. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality reflects an overarching interpretive framework for evangelical spiritual formation: a holistic and grace-filled spirituality that encompasses relational (connecting), transformational (becoming), and vocational (doing) dynamics. At the same time, contributors respectfully acknowledge the differences between Reformed, Holiness, and Pentecostal paradigms of the spiritual life. And, by bringing together writers from around the world who share a common orthodoxy, this reference work is truly global and international in both its topical scope and contributors. Entries give appropriate attention to concepts, concerns, and formative figures in the evangelical tradition of spirituality that other reference work neglect. They offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available, exploring the similarities and differences between Christianity and alternate spiritualities without lapsing into relativism. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality is a resource that covers a wide range of topics relating to Christian spirituality and is biblically engaged, accessible, and relevant for all contemporary Christians.”

Taking the Bible Seriously: Honest Differences about Biblical Interpretation

Taking the Bible Seriously: Honest Differences about Biblical Interpretation

$25

“J. Benton White claims that both modernists and fundamentalists believe in the Bible and take it seriously. Here he surveys the many Protestant approaches to the Bible and then focuses on the issues raised by each group during this century. He gives special attention to Protestants’ struggle with the question of how the Bible should be understood. By doing so, he helps individuals examine this crucial question and allows them to draw their own conclusions. White focuses on Martin Luther’s affirmation of the “Protestant principle” of the Bible alone, then follows debate up to the present.”

A Different Jesus?: The Christ of the Latter-Day Saints

A Different Jesus?: The Christ of the Latter-Day Saints

$11.22

Foreword and afterword by Richard J. MouwAre Latter-day Saints Christian, or do they worship a different Jesus? In this engaging book based on the foundational Mormon documents, Robert Millet clearly explains why Latter-day Saints claim to be Christians and compares their understanding of Jesus with the views of traditional Christian believers.A leading Mormon scholar who has spent much of his career in conversation with traditional Christians and their writings, Millet discusses what constitutes Christianity and examines how the Latter-day Saints fit or do not fit within that rubric. Intended to inform rather than to convince or persuade, A Different Jesus? clears away misconceptions and doctrinal distortions that characterize more polemical works about Mormonism. Millet points out the many beliefs that Latter-day Saints hold in common with traditional Christians, yet he also emphasizes differences where they exist. A Different Jesus? initiates and will foster a significant dialogue between Latter-day Saints and traditional Christians. Of special value are a lengthy chapter that answers some of the most frequently asked questions about Mormonism, a glossary showing how key theological terms are defined by Latter-day Saints, and evangelical scholar Richard Mouw’s foreword and afterword, which help set an agenda for future discussions between these rich religious traditions.

A Muslim Woman in Tito's Yugoslavia

A Muslim Woman in Tito’s Yugoslavia

$38.71

Born in a small river town in the largely Muslim province of Sandzak, Munevera Hadzisehovic grew up in an area sandwiched between the Orthdox Christian regions of Montenegro and Serbia, cut off from other Muslims in Bosnia and Harzegovina. Her story takes her reader from the rural culture of the early 1930s through the massacres of World War II and the repression of the early Communist regime to the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. It sheds light on the history of Yugoslavia from the interwar Kingdom to the breakup of the socialist state. In poignant detail, Hadzisehovic paints a picture not only of her own life but of the lives of other Muslims, especially women, in an era and an area of great change. Readers are given a loving yet accurate portrait of Muslim customs pertaining to the household, gardens, food and dating–in short, of everyday life. Hadzisehovic writes from the inside out, starting with her emotions and experiences, then moving outward to the facts that concern those interested in this region: the role of the Ustashe, Chetniks, and Germans in World War II, the attitude of Serbdominated Yugoslavia toward Muslims, and the tragic state of ethnic relations that led to war again in the 1990s. Some of Hadzisehovic’s experiences and many of her views will be controversial. She speaks of Muslim women’s reluctance to give up the veil, the disapproval of mixed marriages, and the problems between Serb and Croat nationalists. Her benign view of Italian occupation is in stark contrast to her depiction of bloodthirsty Chetnik irregulars. Her analysis of Belgrade’s Muslims suggests that class differences were just as important as religious affiliation. In this personal, yet universal story, Hazisehovic mourns the loss of two worlds–the orderly Muslim world of her childhood and the secular, multi-ethnic world of communist Yugoslavia.

A Store of Common Sense: Gnomic Theme and Style in Old Icelandic and Old English Wisdom Poetry

A Store of Common Sense: Gnomic Theme and Style in Old Icelandic and Old English Wisdom Poetry

$131.93

A Store of Common Sense is the first comparative study in English of Old Icelandic and Old English wisdom poetry. It examines problems of form, unity, and coherence, and how the genre responds to social change, both reflecting and shaping the thinking of the communities which originate it. Carolyne Larrington analyses the differences between the pagan wisdom of Norse, ranging through everyday practical advice, rune magic, and spells, and the Christian, socially oriented ideals of Old English wisdom poetry, strongly rooted in Christian concepts of ‘natural’ order and hierarchy in God’s Creation. Close reading in primary texts, both runic and magical, lays bare the skilful, structural integration of pragmatic, social wisdom with other kinds of knowledge. The book explores the possibility of Christian influence on Norse texts and demonstrates the impact of Christian learning on the ancient pagan genre. The existence of a gnomic ‘key’ in Norse and English narrative verse is also shown. Far from being platitudinous moralizing, the wisdom poems of the two literatures reveal themselves as comic, ironic, dramatic, and grandiose by turns, exploring a gamut of themes unequal led in any other genre of the period.

A Tapestry of Beliefs: Christian Traditions in Northern Ireland

$13.75

While religion is not the only factor in the Northern Ireland conflict, myth and misinformation about the similarities and differences that exist between the four largest Churches (Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland and Methodist) and the score or so of smaller denominations contribute to the poisonous climate of sectarianism. In this important new book, representatives of each Christian tradition in the North dispel much of this misinformation in clear statements of their actual beliefs, practices and structures.Written by members of the denominational traditions, each chapter follows broadly similar themes: their origins, doctrinal position, sacraments and ordinances, spirituality, worship and liturgy, buildings and artefacts, and attitudes to other denominations.Additional chapters analyse some of the issues — and isms — which cross denominational boundaries, including evangelicalism and fundamentalism, ecumenism, politics, sectarianism, and the role of women.
