Christian Persecution

Christian Persecution – Will it Ever End?
The world marches onward in its quest for better education for the common people and a higher standard of living, not to mention more knowledge in many areas. So you would think that as this happens people would become more understanding and tolerant of each other’s differences, but this does not seem to be so, at least in the case of religious tolerance.
In fact, certain publications that contain Catholic News tell us that in many countries religious intolerance is more the norm as far as Christianity in concerned. Once it was mainly communism that was against Christianity, but in spite of the decline of communism Christian persecution has increased worldwide, with more countries than ever before persecuting Christians. There are now more Christian martyrs – people who die because of their faith – than ever before.
In many countries anyone who is a Christian can expect to be treated so badly that their very existence is threatened. And in many cases they are either beaten senseless or shot while carrying out the worship to God that is an integral part of their faith. How long will Christians have to suffer such treatment? Probably until Jesus returns to rule the earth – an event that only Christians believe will happen.
Meanwhile, the problem is so severe that many Catholic charities have sprung up to give aid to Christians in need; those who have been denied basic human rights of food and shelter because of their faith. Christians in those lucky countries where religious freedom is in force have the chance to help their fellow Christians, thus obeying the teachings of Jesus to take care of each other. They can do this easily by buying goods from online stores set up for the purpose of aiding persecuted Christians, by making a donation or by making a bequest in their wills.
Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is an international Catholic charity under papal jurisdiction, which yearly offers financial support to more than 5,000 projects worldwide. ACN supports the poor and persecuted churches with prayer, pastoral relief and material assistance. Help is given to refugees of all denominations.
Today this charity raises around $US 70 million dollars annually, which it distributes to the Church in need in 144 different countries around the world. Aid to the Church in Need has more than 600,000 benefactors around the world and they are kept informed about our work by our “Mirror” newsletter.
The money we distribute comes entirely from private donations. We receive no public or official Church monies whatsoever.

Understanding Persecution $1.99 “>>Christians know that they are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ. However, occasionally Christians fail to realize that in order to be a conqueror, there must be something or someone to conquer and overcome. >> >>Persecution is an area where we must learn to overcome. Of course, there are different degrees of persecution. In the United States, for instance, we do not know the kind of persecution experienced by Christians in other lands. But the Word of God does not give us different principles for overcoming these varying degrees of suffering by persecution. >> >>Jesus suffered much persecution in His ministry, even to the point of being executed by His enemies. But was He overcome by it? No! He arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. Neither did He let it affect His life and attitudes. Even at the cross, He cried out for forgiveness for His enemies.>> >>>>Book Size: >>>>3.5″ X 5.5″ Inches >>>Page Count: >>32>>>> > >” |

Christian Persecution, Martyrdom, and Orthodoxy $125 This volume brings together seven seminal papers by the great radical historian Geoffrey de Ste. Croix, who died in 2000, on early Christian topics, with an especial focus on persecution and martyrdom. Christian martyrdom is a topic which conjures up ready images of inhumane persecutors confronted by Christian heroes who perish for the instant but win the long-term battle for reputation. In five of these essays Ste. Croix scrutinizes the evidence to reveal the significant role ofChristian themselves, first as volunteer martyrs and later, after the triumph of Christianity in the early fourth century, as organizers of much more effective persecutions. A sixth essay pursues the question of the control of Christianity through a comprehensive study of the context for one of theChurch's most important and divisive doctrinal decisions, at the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451); the key role of the emperor and his senior secular officials is revealed, contrary to the prevailing interpretation of Church historians. Finally the attitudes of the early Church towards property and slavery are reviewed, to show the divide between the Gospel message and actual practice. |

Father, Forgive Us: A Christian Response to the Church’s Heritage of Jewish Persecution $17.99 “This passionate work takes a hard look at serious matters. What comes to mind when a Jewish person hears the word “Christian?” What role did the Church play in the persecution of Jewish people throughout the ages? Beginning with Ignatius of Antioch (who contended that Jews were in league with the devil) and continuing to the 20th century, we learn how Christians laid the foundations upon which the Nazis built their creed. True healing between the Jewish people and the Church can only happen when the past is acknowledged. Eye-opening 287 pages.” |

Christian Martyrdom in Russia; Persecution of the Doukhobors) $25.48 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: II THE DOUKHOBORS OXE HUNDRED YEARS AGO A Papeb Written In 1805 ] In the second half of the last century there arose in Russia a Society the existence of which would have seemed impossible in our country. Suddenly there appeared people who not only repudiated all the religious ceremonies and outward ritual of the Greek-Russian Church, but even did not accept the outward baptism by water, and the communion of the body and blood of Christ in the bread and wine. It was natural that such men could not have been left in peace either by their neighbours or by the Government itself, the more so that no one knew or understood their spirit. Prom every side they suffered almost incessant persecution; every encounter with a priest, police agent, or magistrate caused them to be brought before the law and imprisoned; every opposition from the neighbouring population was accompanied with dreadful abuse and outrage; their every action rendered them, in the eyes of others, monsters and breakers of the general peace. The higher Government formed its opinion about them principally from the reports of the lower authorities, and they were often sent off into exile as State offenders. Thus, the persecution of the Doukhobors endured until the mild and peaceful reign of Alexander I.2 1 The text is translated from the Russian of an old MS. lately republished in a monthly periodical called Sussian Antiquity. We have translated it almost in full, as being evidently written by an individual well acquainted, and himself in perfect sympathy, with the religious movement in question. It (rives a very fair idea of the life and teaching nf the Doukhobors at the time indicated, and indeed at the present time. The remarkable events which have happened among this people during the last few years … |

Martyrdom and Persecution in the Early Church $64.98 The definitive survey of martyrdom and persecution during the first four centuries of the Church. In this classic work, the late W.H.C. Frend explores the mindset of those who suffered persecution as well as the motivation of those who persecuted them. He shows the critical importance for early Christians of Jewish ideas, influenced heavily as thye were by the story of Daniel and the trauma of the revolt of the Maccabeean. He also argues that the Christian concept of martyrdom, so highly regarded among early Christians, can only be understood as springing from Jewish roots. |

The Waldensian Dissent: Persecution and Survival, C.1170-C.1570 $41 “The Poor of Lyons, whom their detractors called “Waldensians”–after the name of their founder Waldo (or Vaudes)–first emerged around 1170 and formed a sect that embraced evangelism, prophesy and poverty. Challenging prohibition by following the Scripture to the last letter, they were condemned as heretics. The Waldensians constituted the only medieval heresy to have survived to the dawn of the so-called “modern” period. Their tale of simple devotion mixed with a fierce tenacity serves to illuminate aspects of religious belief that have persisted to the present day.” |

You Have a Jewish Name!: A Messianic Jew Tells Her Story of Persecution $12.99 “You have a Jewish name A Messianic Jew Tells her Story of Persecution in Romania is a painful yet sometimes humorous account of my life as a believer, from my first days at school to my expulsion from the university for my unhealthy origin. The book describes different aspects of my persecution by the communist secret police, including my imprisonment in a psychiatric hospital. It shows the comfort I received from my father and the strong faith he imparted to me. I wrote this book so that the generations to come will never forget what many believers endured during the Ceauescu dictatorship. It is a reminder that the God of Israel is able to make something beautiful out of suffering. Teenagers and adults alike will benefit from reading this book. The main theme is the faithfulness of the Lord in hard times.” |

Time of the Last Persecution $16.79 “Enigmatic” was the tag oft-times tossed ’round Bill Fay, whose loyal cult following grew significantly over the years. Signed to Decca, the singer/songwriter and pianist released two albums in the late ’60s and early ’70s; their haunting, darkly shadowed songs were never meant to appeal to the masses, even at the height of the psychedelia-streaked introspection sparked by the soul-searching of the day. While the Beatles flew off to meet the Maharishi, Fay fell under the spell of a 19th century compendium of commentaries on the Biblical books of Daniel and Revelations, which would inspire his second album, Time of the Last Persecution. But before the born-agains jump on to the Fay bandwagon, they should be warned that the artist was equally influenced by the ravaging events of the day. The title track, “Time of the Last Persecution,” was written in an immediate and visceral response to the killings of four students at Kent State. Even in 1971, the intensity of Fay’s lyrics — reflecting his commentaries in their poetical language, their highly introspective nature, the brooding quality of the music, all exquisitely enhanced by Ray Russell’s evocative blues guitar work — left most reviewers cold and confused. In truth, the album would have slotted much more neatly into the coming firestorm that descended on Britain later in the decade, and would have provided a surprisingly supple bridge between the apocalyptic visions of roots reggae and the political polemics of punk. The set certainly contains all the fire and fury of the latter movement, as well as the deeply dread atmospheres of the former. By 2005, with the rise of evangelicalism and Christian rock, Persecution no longer sounds so obscure or out of place; it is, however, a personal journey of spirituality, not a platform from which to proselytize. For all its dark vision, it’s the possibility of peace and hope that shines through the gloom, and as for all the seeming quietude of the music, it thunders, too, with a power and emotion that speak in volumes as loudly as Fay’s striking lyrics. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi Performers: Darryl Runswick – Bass (Electric), Bass (Acoustic), Bass; Daryl Runswick – Bass (Electric), Bass (Acoustic); Tony Roberts – Flute (Tenor), Wind, Flute (Alto); Alan Rushton – Drums; Bill Fay – Vocals, Piano; Bud Parkes – Trumpet; Nick Evans – Trombone; |

Christendom and Its Discontents: Exclusion, Persecution, and Rebellion, 1000-1500 $55 “Though united nominally by the Church of Rome, medieval Europe was in fact a diverse society, in terms of belief and social practices. This diversity led to controversy and upheaval in the centuries after 1000, as religious authorities demanded greater uniformity and obedience. This book of essays by leading scholars is about the sources of dissent and diversity in medieval society and the Church’s attempt to repress dissent and enforce conformity to its beliefs between the years 1000 and 1500. No book has hitherto attempted so broad an approach to the issue of discontent in medieval Europe.” |

God of Israel and Christian Th $20 “With acknowledgment that Christian theology contributed to the persecution and genocide of Jews comes a dilemma: how to excise the cancer without killing the patient? Kendall Soulen shows how important Christian assertions-the uniqueness of Jesus, the Christian covenant, the finality of salvation in Christ-have been formulated in destructive, supersessionist ways not only in the classical period (Justin Martyr, Irenaeus) and early modernity (Kant and Schleiermacher) but even contemporary theology (Barth and Rahner). Along with this first full-scale critique of Christian supersessionism, Soulen’s own constructive proposal regraps the narrative unity of Christian identity and the canon through an original and important insight into the divine-human covenant, the election of Israel, and the meaning of history.” |

The First Christian Centuries $26 “The first three centuries of the early church were a period of struggle, transition and growth. Recent attempts by historians and social scientists to understand this era have produced various and conflicting accounts. Indeed, some have sought to overturn the former consensus regarding which texts provide reliable evidence and how they should be interpreted. In The First Christian Centuries, Paul McKechnie, a classical scholar, examines some key issues in the current debate. Which ancient sources are reliable? What was the social makeup of the early Christian movement? What can we determine about the growth rate and persecution of first-century Christians? What do we know about the second generation of Christians? How should we assess the reliability of our various sources from the second and third centuries? What were the nature and extent of persecutions in the second and third centuries? What were the long-term consequences of Paul’s making converts within the household of Caesar? Can we gain historical perspective on the diversity that traveled under the name Christian in the early centuries? How were women regarded and what roles did they play? And how was it that a Roman emperor, Constantine, was converted–and what were the implications for the Christian movement? The value of McKechnie’s study lies not in providing a comprehensive narrative of the origins and growth of the early church. Rather, it lies in critically examining key historical issues in sustained conversation with contemporary scholarship and the ancient sources. McKechnie will be valued by both students and scholars of early Christianity as an intelligent and informed companion who offers repeated and valuable insights into this critical era of Christian beginnings.” |

Children Surviving Persecution: An International Study of Trauma and Healing $144.98 This international study of children’s experiences of organized persecution, explores the Holocaust and its aftermath as prototypical social trauma. Traumatized persons’ feelings of shame and guilt as well as a sense of being different may prevail, and they may attribute great power to others, seek safety in isolation, or search for a rescuer. Nevertheless, as a group, the child survivors of the Holocaust have achieved remarkable success as adults. Drawing on the wealth of personal and interview information, the contributors create a synthesis of personal history and psychological analysis. Adult memories of traumatic childhood experiences are accompanied by discussions of their effects and by analysis of the various coping mechanisms used to establish a viable post-war existence. These accounts are distinguished by the fact that they are by and about individuals who grew up in undistinguished Christian and Jewish families; not those of prominent figures or resistance fighters or rescuers. All experienced unrest and many suffered trauma during the Nazi regime, as a result of the war, and during the post-war turbulence. An important collection for students and scholars of the Holocaust and for those professionals in a position to help surviving victims of other organized persecution, civil violence, strife, and abuse. |

Signs and Mysteries: Revealing Ancient Christian Symbols $16.95 “Imagine the dangerous life of a First Century Christian. You’ve embraced your newfound faith in Christ but fear the risk of persecution or death at the hands of the pagans living around you. Then a trusted friend tells you about some of Jesus’ followers who secretly meet. He whispers into your ear, “Look for a fish carved into the entranceway to the burialchambers beside the Via Tiburtina.” You smile in gratitude. Comparatively, modern society is awash in those same Christian symbols that kept early Christians safely connected: they appear on churches, bumper stickers, mugs???even mints and stuffed animals. Yet, we are often ignorant of the origins of these symbols??? having lost the urgency of our spiritual ancestors’ hostile environment. Noted author Mike Aquilina conducts an intriguing tour of symbols that guided the first four centuries of the Church’s existence. He explains how Christians borrowed pagan and Jewish symbols, giving them new, distinctly Christian meanings. Recover the voice and urgency of our spiritual ancestors’ symbolic language and discover the impact the symbols still have. Black and white illustrations by Lea Ravotti of artifacts uncovered throughout the Middle East beautifully complement the text, showing the variety of contexts in which they were found and the range of skills displayed in their execution.” |

God Is Not a Christian: And Other Provocations $23.99 “> In this essential collection of Desmond Tutu’s most historic and controversial speeches and writings, we witness his unique career of provoking the powerful and confronting the world in order to protect the oppressed, the poor, and other victims of injustice. > Renowned first for his courageous opposition to apartheid in South Africa, he and his ministry soon took on international dimensions. Rooted in his faith and in the values embodied in the African spirit of “ubuntu,” Tutu’s uncompromising vision of a shared humanity has compelled him to speak out, even in the face of violent opposition and virulent criticism, against political injustice and oppression, religious fundamentalism, and the persecution of minorities. > Arranged by theme and introduced with insight and historical context by Tutu’s biographer, John Allen, this collection takes readers from the violent apartheid clashes in South Africa to the healing work of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee; from Trafalgar Square after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a national broadcast commemorating the legacy of Nelson Mandela; from Ireland’s Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin to a basketball stadium in Luanda, Angola. Whether exploring democracy in Africa, the genocide in Rwanda, black theology, the inclusion of gays and lesbians in the church, or the plight of Palestinians, Tutu’s message of truth is clear and his voice unflinching. > In a world of suffering and conflict, where human laws all too often clash with God’s law, Tutu’s hopeful, timeless messages become increasingly necessary and powerful with each passing year–and are needed now more than ever.” |

My Faith – Spiritual Baptist Christian $10.99 “The Spiritual Baptist Faith is the name given to the Christian religious group emerging among the Africans in the 19th century in Trinidad. In 1917 the group was outlawed by the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance against its mode of worship which was considered “too noisy” and “too African” and therefore uncivilized and unacceptable. It suffered legal persecution and prosecution until the ordinance was repealed in 1951. Syncretism and secretism are fundamental features of its growth. Its survival is a tribute to the resilience and faith of its adherents. The absence of written records of those early years facilitated the perpetuation of misconceptions about the Faith among the citizenry. This book explores the development and the practices of the Spiritual Baptist Faith, its relationship with African religion and with Christianity, and reveals the essential tenets of the much maligned and misunderstood indigenous religious community in a clear and concise manner. Reverend Teacher Hazel Ann Gibbs DePeza is a practicing Spiritual Baptist of 27 years, an ordained minister and a spiritual teacher and mother. She is a trained teacher, holds a Diploma in Theology, a Bachelor of Arts Hons. and Master of Philosophy degrees, and is completing the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. Teacher Hazel, as she is known in the Baptist community, is the principal of the Herman Parris Spiritual Baptist Southland School of Theology. With 33 years of teaching experience at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, she is also a senior instructor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. She has written two theses and edited two books on the Spiritual Baptist Faith, is published in the University ofPuerto Rico’s La Torre and Yorke University’s Religious Encyclopedia, has won prizes for writing, and has presented papers at local, and international religious and academic conferences.” |

A History of Christianity in Asia $40 The history of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the story of Christianity in the East has received scant attention. This Christianity looked neither to Rome nor Constantinople, and for centuries remained proudly Asian. This first volume of Samuel Moffett’s epic history reveals this fascinating and little-known story. While Paul and other early missionaries converted Greeks and Romans, then the barbarian tribes of Europe, priests of the Church of the East — later called the Nestorian — established centers in Persia and Afghanistan, across India and the Mongolian steppes, and in China itself as early as the 7th century. These missionaries experienced both favor and persecution according to the political climate of their times; but the expansion they achieved would not be matched by the West until after the 13th century.Moffett captivates readers with the rise and fall of empires and the rulers whose actions determined the fate of Christianity in their realms. It was Kublai Khan’s mother, a Christian Mongol princess, who encouraged the Great Khan’s tolerance of Christian missionaries. Indeed, Mongol armies were known to ride into battle under the banner of the Holy Cross. But it was a dust cloud from a different desert — Islam — that was to dramatically bring about the end of this first, dynamic period of Asian Christianity.A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on the religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission it is stimulating for all readers interestedin Christian history. |

A Public Faith: From Constantine to the Medieval World AD 312-600 $8 Used – As volume two opens, persecution of Christians is coming to an end with the triumph of Constantine. Soon legal measures protected church interests. Clergy are exempted from taxation; Christian pastors are appointed as military chaplains. But inclusion brings its own dangers as the temptations to compromise grow stronger. A Rumor About the Jews $24.99 In its portrayal of Judaism as a worldwide conspiracy dedicated to the destruction of Christian civilization, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion remains one of the most infamous documents ever written. Despite being proven a crude forgery, the pamphlet managed to pervade twentieth-century thinking, often being twisted to suit its handlers’ purposes, and to justify the most extreme persecution of the Jews. Shockingly, as recently as 2002, a documentary was aired in Egypt falsely presenting the Protocols as historical fact–and the Protocols is still reprinted in many parts of the world. In A Rumor about the Jews, Stephen Eric Bronner systematically debunks the antisemitic assertions made in the Protocols of Zion. He also traces its history, its influence on right-wing movements throughout the twentieth century, and the ongoing appeal of bigotry. A work of intellectual history, A Rumor About the Jews explores the connection between antisemitism and what became an overarching political assault upon the Enlightenment legacy, taking the reader on a historical journey that provides a new and deeper understanding of an insidious ideology and its broader implications. Bronner s sharp and penetrating analysis offers new insights into the nature of antisemitism, along with a warning against underestimating the power of this hateful tract. |

A Season for Justice $1.32 In this gripping, thought-provoking, and sometimes emotional from-the-trenches account of religious persecution in America, Harvard-trained lawyer David French brings a unique perspective to the culture wars. Fighting the small battles in the small places, French has seen first-hand the real-life consequences of an imbalanced legal system and a Christian political approach that sometimes works against the very freedoms it seeks to protect. Through the use of stories, case studies and personal accounts, French traces precisely how Christians fight battles in church, school, and the workplace to preserve the basic right to share the gospel and worship as they choose. A Season for Justice will challenge and move its readers and force them to think clearly and soberly about the real legal attack on Christianity in America. |
