Christian Children Movies

Where is the best place to find Christian movie & tv reviews?

The reason I’m asking is that I have been surprised more than once when I go to a movie about what I see there. The ratings don’t always give you all the information you’d like. If one of my children go to see a movie with friends, I want to know what they’re seeing. I’ve found one site that has reviews, and I wondered if anybody else knows of anything better. It’s www.mediaofchrist.com. Anything better that any of you know of?

One of the best places I have found is connected with James Dobson’s Focus on the Family Website. It’s called “Plugged In Movie Reviews.” They review not only movies, but also television, and music as well, rating them for content – positive elements, spiritual content, sexual content, violent content, language content, and drugs & alcohol content. You can access it at “pluggedinonline.com” or through Dobson’s sponsoring website, “family.org.”

ReViewing the Movies: A Christian Response to Contemporary Film

ReViewing the Movies: A Christian Response to Contemporary Film

$3.48

With film being one of the most powerful cultural influences in America, we Christians cheat ourselves and limit our opportunities to witness to the culture when we label all movies as either "completely corrupt" or as "harmless entertainment." The one stance thoroughly excludes a possible source of greater understanding; the other allows ungodly values to freely enter our hearts. What we need is the balance discernment provides. A film not made solely by or about Christians can still be uplifting and connect with us spiritually–as long as it conveys truth with cinematic excellence. Yet many of us are unequipped to determine which movies meet that qualification. That’s why we need the right tools. With them we can shift to the offensive and intentionally evaluate and discuss how a movie illustrates God’s truth. In this book, two media experts offer you those tools. Using a wide range of examples from throughout cinematic history, they explain how a film is created, what the story line means for its effectiveness, and how films impact our kids. In learning to better understand the movies and unpack their images, you’ll not only gain an informed discernment for yourself, but more importantly, help your children, friends, and the unsaved come to view Hollywood’s messages more critically and more carefully.

Finding Faith at the Movies

Finding Faith at the Movies

$13

“Using movies to explore faith and spirituality issues is in vogue today, but it’s difficult to find the time to show and discuss a full-length film in most adult or youth classes or groups. Barbara Mraz, a deacon in the Episcopal Church and a high school teacher, found a solution. This practical, hands-on book will help Christian educators, youth leaders, and anyone wishing to use films as teaching tools to explore and discuss a film within the usual 40-50 minutes available. Mraz provides an introduction, related Scripture passages, carefully selected film segments (with VCR counter numbers and DVD settings), and thought-provoking discussion questions for twelve movies that explore topics such as temptation, duty, forgiveness, redemption, gratitude, and other important Christian values. This proven technique–one Mraz has been using for years–requires a minimum of preparation and generates the maximum in participation. Industry film ratings are provided so leaders can pick appropriate films.”

The Catholic Crusade Against the Movies, 1940-1975

Studios submitted their films to the Legion for a rating, which varied from general approval to condemnation. Saint Paul Returns to the Movies: Triumph Over Shame

Saint Paul Returns to the Movies: Triumph Over Shame

$22

“In this compelling sequel to his Saint Paul at the Movies, Robert Jewett brings another selection of contemporary films into dialogue with the biblical worldview. Jewett discusses ten major Hollywood movies that focus on the theme of shame and interprets them in the light of what St. Paul’s letters say on the subject. His compelling analysis not only shows the cinema’s unique capacity to unmask one of the deepest dilemmas of the human heart, but also offers the revolutionary view that the triumph of grace over shameful status, circumstances, and experiences lies at the heart of Paul’s theology.”

Called to Be Human: Letters to My Children on Living a Christian Life

Called to Be Human: Letters to My Children on Living a Christian Life

$15

“Continuing the Christian tradition of wisdom imparted through letters, Michael Jinkins here explores big questions of life and faith that challenge people of all ages, especially young adults. Written as a series of letters to the author’s own adult children, Called to Be Human resonates at once with the “mere Christianity” of C. S. Lewis and the topical relevance of Anne Lamott. / Readers will find in these pages startling insights illuminating our contemporary experience as human beings, whether Christian or not. Conversing throughout with an amazing range of thinkers and writers Calvin, Bonhoeffer, Lewis, Flannery O’Connor, Rumi, and Frederick Buechner, to name just a few Jinkins doesn’t hesitate to share his own frustrations with some aspects of the church, including the failure of many Christians to examine what they believe. Eloquent, edgy, and honest, Called to Be Human offers well-written, accessible, surprising food for thought.”

Catching Light: Looking for God in the Movies

Catching Light: Looking for God in the Movies

$20

“Films have come to not only entertain modern minds but also to inform and shape them. Many of the best cinematic works have profound religious elements, either clear or subtle. In “Catching Light” Roy Anker examines nineteen popular films, showing how they convey a range of striking perspectives on the human encounter with God.>Organized by genre — tragedy, comedy, fairy-tale, and drama — these selected films present different, surprising ways in which God shows up amid the messy circumstances of life. For each film Anker looks closely at the plot, especially at how experiences of the storiesb characters ultimately move them btoward Lightb — a recognition of a loving, redemptive deity.>The first section of the book looks at three classic films of the 1970s that inspect personal, social, and cultural evil: “The Godfather, Chinatown,” and “The Deer Hunter.” The second group of films depicts the ways and depths of specifically Christian notions of redemption: “Tender Mercies, The Mission, Places in the Heart,” and “Babettebs Feast.” Some of the most successful films of our time have come as fairy-tale fantasies: the “Star Wars” saga, “Superman,” and three of Steven Speilbergbs blost boyb stories, each of which Anker interprets as fables of search and redemption. The films in the last section of the book feature characters who, to their great surprise, are ambushed by a wholly unexpected God: “Grand Canyon, American Beauty,” and “Three Colors: Blue.”>In addition to focusing on the theological dimension of each film, Anker comments on its merits both as story and as cinema. Every chapter also includes sidebars that discuss each filmbs history and significance as well as thequality and special features of DVD editions. For anyone interested in the intersection of religion, art, and culture, “Catching Light” offers a unique view of contemporary faith.”

Christian School Teacher

Christian School Teacher

$16.99

“How many Christian “school teachers” are fully familiar with God’s biblical mandates for their vocation? School teachers inherently hold a powerful influence over students, for good or bad. This sobering reality should motivate all school administrators, especially in Christian schools, to ensure that their teachers are spiritually qualified. Academic qualifications for teachers are essential, but spiritual qualifications are critical for meeting the biblical goals of education. In fact, it is the spiritual motivation and qualification of teachers that should be the greatest area of concern during the process of selecting faculty members to serve in Christian schools. Veteran teacher and Christian counselor Hooper offers twenty-one defining principles that separate Christian teachers from those who are not Christian. Do today’s school teachers make the grade? This book is a must read for all who aspire to serve God effectively in the school classroom. Duane Hooper is a school teacher, principal, ordained minister, and board certified Christian counselor. His ministry was providentially redirected from the pastorate to education in 1990 when he began serving as teacher at Bay Area Christian School in League City, Texas. While serving as teacher and junior high principal, his passion for Christian education intensified. Concerning the influence held by teachers, especially in light of Christ’s love for children, Duane was burdened regarding the need for Christian teachers to model not just Spiritual fruit, but Christ’s express love for children. Duane’s love for students is manifested in his several nominations to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. With both masters and doctoral degreesin Christian education and a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling, Duane has an ardent passion to share what he believes to be a Bible-based vision for the ministries of Christian school teachers-whether serving in Christian or public schools.”

Christians in the Movies

Christians in the Movies

$24.95

Christians in the Movies traces the arc of the portrayal in film of Christians from 1905 to the present. For most of the first six decades, the portrayals were favorable and even reverential. By contrast, from 1970 on, Christians have often been treated with hostility and often outright ridicule. This book explores this shift through in-depth reviews and commentaries on 100 important films, as well as briefer discussions of about 75 additional Christian-themed films. Peter E. Dans examines variouscausative factors for this change such as the abolition of the Hays Motion Picture Production Code; the demise of the Catholic Legion of Decency; and the associated profound societal and cultural changes. From a look at the real story behind the Scopes trial to portraits of actors, directors and writers most prominently associated with films involving Christians and Christianity, Christians in the Movies provides a great resource for those who wish to select films for showing at churches, universities or for personal viewing and critical examination of the recent cultural movements and thought.

Foundations of the Christian Faith

Foundations of the Christian Faith

$14.99

“Today, teenagers in church often have no concrete idea why they are Christians or what it really means to be a Christian. Statistics report large numbers of young people reject their faith as they move into college and adulthood. Many Christian books for children present Bible stories illustrating the power of Christian faith. Unfortunately, few talk about faith in a way that makes Christianity personal, yet are written so children and young teens can understand. Foundations of the Faith presents many of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith, beginning with sin and salvation, then continuing with relationships and responsibilities of a born-again believer. Finally, the book presents instruction on Christ and the Church. Geared for children ages 9-13, this book can be an effective tool, assisting young people to gain maturity in their Christian life. Alan R. Noble is a born-again Christian, schooled in the Word since childhood. He was very fortunate to sit under capable preaching and teaching throughout his life. His passion for the spiritual welfare of children grew out of his years of work experience, and his understanding of the Scriptures. He understands that children need to be instructed in the meat of the Word as well as the milk (Hebrews 5: 12-14). Mr. Noble was educated at William Paterson University, a liberal arts institute in northern New Jersey, and received a B.A. in education, with a certificate to teach elementary school. Later, he received an M.A. in Communication Arts, and a certificate in supervision. He worked as a teacher and coordinator before retiring after 31 years in public education. Currently, he and his wife spend winters in San Antonio, Texas, where hehas worked for several years in Christian education.”
