Valentine’s Day From Around The World
Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular event for many couples around the world. For centuries, Valentine’s Day have been celebrated across the world, although it was first introduced by western countries. So what is Valentine’s Day? What are the usual traditions involved in Valentine’s Day that it became popular for many people across the world?
Brief history of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day was said to be named after a Christian martyr named Valentine. The event was then established by by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496. According to many historians, the holiday first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Valentine’s Day were best celebrated in the past with the exchange of greetings cards, which was also called as Valentine’s cards. Eventually, the presentation of flowers and confectioneries became a popular trend in today’s Valentine’s Day celebration.
Valentine’s Day in other countries
The presentation of flowers, Valentine’s cards, and confectioneries is widely practiced in the western hemisphere. However, many favors the giving of flowers rather than any other kinds of gifts. But other than the western countries, other countries around the world have also come to celebrate the Valentine’s Day. Some of the most notable are those from the Asian countries such as in Japan, China, and valentine’s day philippines.
Valentine’s Day in Japan
Japanese style Valentine’s Day is very unique from other countries. Unlike the valentine’s day philippines which have been known to have adapted the western style Valentine’s Day, Japaneses women would usually give a heart shaped chocolates to Japanese men. And unlike the westernized style of Valentine’s Day, such as the giving of gifts like greeting cards, candies, flowers, or dinner dates, common activities in Japan would only involve giving the right amount of chocolate to each person.
Valentine’s Day in Philippines and China
In China, the men would usually give gifts to their Valentine in this occasion. And like the western traditions, Valentine’s Day in China is best celebrated with the giving of flowers and confectioneries. However, gifts can also vary from what the woman would like to have in Valentine’s Day. The giving of Valentine’s cards, however, is none existent in China.
In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day is also celebrated the way China celebrates theirs. The valentine’s day philippines is called “Araw ng mga Puso” or “Hearts Day”. And because flowers are very popular in the Philippines, this event is usually marked by a steep increase in the prices of flowers.

The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine, Volume 5: Christian Doctrine and $23 “Jaroslav Pelikan begins this volume with the crisis of orthodoxy that confronted all Christian denominations by the beginning of the eighteenth century and continues through the twentieth century in its particular concerns with ecumenism. The modern period in the history of Christian doctrine, Pelikan demonstrates, may be defined as the time when doctrines that had been assumed more than debated for most of Christian history were themselves called into question: the idea of revelation, the uniqueness of Christ, the authority of Scripture, the expectation of life after death, even the very transcendence of God. >”Knowledge of the immense intellectual effort invested in the construction of the edifice of Christian doctrine by the best minds of each successive generation is worth having. And there can hardly be a more lucid, readable and genial guide to it than this marvellous work.”–”Economist” >”This volume, like the series which it brings to a triumphant conclusion, may be unreservedly recommended as the best one-stop introduction currently available to its subject.”–Alister E. McGrath, “Times Higher Education Supplement ” >”Professor Pelikan’s series marks a significant departure, and in him we have at last a master teacher.”–Marjorie O’Rourke Boyle, “Commonweal” >”Pelikan’s book marks not only the end of a dazzling scholarly effort but the end of an era as well. There is reason to suppose that nothing quite like it will be tried again.”–Harvey Cox, “Washington Post Book World”" |

The Christian World: A Global History $8.69 In this cogent volume, renowned Christian historian Martin Marty delivers a brief yet sweeping account of Christianity and how it spread from a few believers two thousand years ago to become the world’s largest religion. Comprising nearly one third of the world’s population-more than two billion followers-Christianity is distinctive among major faiths in that it derives both its character and its authority from the divinity of its central figure, Jesus Christ. Examining this facet of Christianity from historical and sociological viewpoints, Marty lays bare the roots of this faith, in turn chronicling its success throughout the world. Writing with great style, and providing impeccable interpretations of historical, canonical, and liturgical documents, Marty gives readers of all faiths and levels of familiarity with Christian practices and history a highly useful and supremely accessible primer. He depicts the life of Christ and his teachings and explains how the apostles set out to spread the Gospel. With a special emphasis on global Christianity, he shows how the religion emerged from its ancestral homelands in Africa, the Levant, and Asia Minor, was imported to Europe, and then spread from there to the rest of the world, most often via trade and conquest. While giving a broad overview, Marty also focuses on specific issues, such as how Christianity struggles with the polar tensions inherent to many of the faith’s denominations, and how it attempts to reconcile some of its stances on armed conflict, justice, and dominion with the teachings of Christ. The Christian World is a chronicle of one of the great belief systems and its many followers. It’s a magnificent story of emperors and kings, war and geography, theology and politics, saints and sinners, and the earthly battle to save souls. Above all, it’s a remarkable testament to the teachings of Christ and how his message spreads around the globe to touch human experience everywhere. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Missionary Movement in Christian History: Studies in Transmission of Faith $26 “This book brings together lectures and articles by the renowned historian of world Christianity, making them available, many for the first time, to scholars and students of world mission. While examining the many aspects that have characterized mission, indigenous Christianity, and colonialism in modern Africa, The Missionary Movement in Christian History has a far broader reach. Essays such as “The Gospel as the Prisoner and Liberator of Culture” reveal the paradoxes of the Christian movement as a whole in discussing how different primitive Mediterranean Christianity is from early Catholicism, from Celtic monasticism, from Reformation Protestantism, and from Nigerian Spirit Christianity. Andrew Walls shows how the central question for Christianity has always been one of identity in many different forms, a phenomenon revealed at each stage of its history by the missionary movement. What this means for theology, however, has hardly been explored. This is the subtext of Walls’ work, providing extraordinary insights and successful counters to secular critiques of world Christianity.” |

The History $16 “David Grene, one of the best known translators of the Greek classics, splendidly captures the peculiar quality of Herodotus, the father of history. >Here is the historian, investigating and judging what he has seen, heard, and read, and seeking out the true causes and consequences of the great deeds of the past. In his “History,” the war between the Greeks and Persians, the origins of their enmity, and all the more general features of the civilizations of the world of his day are seen as a unity and expressed as the vision of one man who as a child lived through the last of the great acts in this universal drama. >In Grene’s remarkable translation and commentary, we see the historian as a storyteller, combining through his own narration the skeletal “historical” facts and the imaginative reality toward which his story reaches. Herodotus emerges in all his charm and complexity as a writer and the first historian in the Western tradition, perhaps unique in the way he has seen the interrelation of fact and fantasy. >”Reading Herodotus in English has never been so much fun. . . . Herodotus crowds his fresco-like pages with all shades of humanity. Whether Herodotus’s view is ‘tragic, ‘ mythical, or merely common sense, it provided him with a moral salt with which the diversity of mankind could be savored. And savor it we do in David Grene’s translation.”–Thomas D’Evelyn, “Christian Science Monitor” >”Grene’s work is a monument to what translation intends, and to what it is hungry to accomplish. . . . Herodotus gives more sheer pleasure than almost any other writer.”–Peter Levi, “New York Times Book Review >”" |

Truth Considered and Applied: Examining Postmodernism, History, and Christian Faith $29.99 “For philosophy and theology students, “Truth Considered and Applied” examines the leading theories of truth in relation to postmodernism, history, and the Christian faith. Author Stewart E. Kelly defends Christianity in the face of postmodernist challenges that would label such religious faith as merely one version of truth among many in a pluralistic world. Likewise, in looking at Christianity as a historical faith, Kelly supports the need for Christians to develop a hermeneutic that does justice to the biblical texts and our informed understanding of the past in general; because if a genuine past cannot be recovered in some meaningful sense, the claims of Jesus being incarnate and risen from the dead are seriously jeopardized.” |

Faiths in Conflict?: Christian Integrity in a Multicultural World $19.99 “Crosscultural communication and interconnection have never been greater in the history of the world. Yet the potential for intercultural conflict accompanies every advance. And religious belief, which lies at the heart of most cultures, often appears to contribute to such unrest and at times even to violence.>In this fascinating and ground-breaking study, Vinoth Ramachandra explores the complex nature of conflict between the major world religions of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.>Challenging stereotypes built up on every side, he raises questions about the seemingly inevitable clash of cultures due to their respective religious commitments. He puts to the test the belief that a secular society that rejects universal truth claims can sustain a truly tolerant and pluralistic society. He passionately demonstrates how the distinctive message of Christianity concerning the uniqueness of Jesus Christ actually provides a basis for a truly democratic and multicultural society.” |

The Social Achievements of the Christian Church $19.95 “First published in 1930, The Social Achievements of the Christian Church, was one of the first modern surveys of Christian social and ethical influence from the time of Christ until the 20th century. In it Edmund Oliver argues that the Christian church-despite numerous and admitted errors in its attempt to influence surrounding culture-has nonetheless rendered outstanding social service to the world. Examples of the church’s external influence can be seen in the establishment of hospitals, asylums, and orphanages; in preservation of learning through the formation of universities; in caring for the needy; and in the philosophical and ethical influence that underpins much of legal and political thought in Western culture. Edmund H. Oliver (1882-1935) taught history and economics before becoming the principal of St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon, and eventually the fourth moderator of the United Church of Canada. During the World War I he served as chaplain to the 196th Battalion and the Canadian Training School and Trench Warfare School at Benhill-on-Sea, England. He also launched the University of Vimy Ridge while in England.” |

A Brief History of the End of the World $5.84 Most people’s concept of the ‘end of the world’ comes from the book of Revelation. Today, there are an estimated 25 million Christian fundamentalists in the US who believe it will come with the ‘Rapture;’ others point to an ecological catastrophe, the AIDS pandemic, nuclear and biological warfare. With the benefit of a vast historical canvas, Pearson examines both apocalyptic theory (biblical literature, art, and popular culture) and practice (politics, cults, war, and revolution), from its Biblical beginnings to the Branch Davidians, via the Vikings, the French Revolution, the Pilgrim Fathers, Hitler’s Apocalyptic rhetoric, asteroids, Hollywood and suicide bombers. Pearson’s illuminating study shows how our pictures of the end of the world have evoked and converged–and are still very much on the agenda. |
