Article 369: The First Cup: Short Story

Article 369: The First Cup: Short Story

By Hasan Yahya, the Dean of Arab Writers of North America

When immigrants enter a country and remain for years to be naturalized they become assimilated to the host country. This story may happen to many races and colors in USA as an act in the process of assimilation among ethnic groups  where the new generations of young immigranta  are influenced with the host country habits and culture.

The story says that one day the father was waiting in the living room watching TV as usual. He was a graduated student from foreign country, His son came in late  that night. The father paused the TV and looked to his son who was abnormal in his usual greetings. The son immediately went up the stairs going to his room. The father guessed that there was something wrong. So he  waited for a while, the time  was inappropriate to break the silence of night, therefore, he waited against his well. Parents usually are concerned when their kids feel bad or bored, or having problems. After a while, may be less than ten minutes, the son got down the stairs, his eyes look sleepy, but his courage as the father told them before, and they grew up in America, they have to open up to their parents no matter what would be the consequences.

- Dad , you may wonder, why I rushed to go upstairs? Dad, took off his glasses, closed the TV program, and looked at his sleepy son. and said:

- Son . I think you have something to tell me. The son did not set and remained standing far from his Dad. The father said in quite tune.

- You may set. A minute or two both Dad and son are quite. Then the son began to talk.

In that night the young man as usual on Saturday night left home before evening to join his schoolmates. They all were Americans, and Christians. The son was a Muslim. That night they all went to a house of one of the schoolmates. In their way, some of them bought few drinks, bottles of bear.

- It was a challenge for me , Dad. I did not want to get drunk. But ……… you know one of my friends said: how do you know that alcohol is harmful? Have you taste it by yourself?  .

The son continues his story,  in a moment of weakness, and challenge, I taste it, and taste it, and taste it. The son looked at his father and said:

- Dad. It was not my intention to break the rules of our culture. Just it happened. Just like that.

Dad was heartedly listening to his son. A moment was to mange the situation. It was the father expertise as a graduate student in administration and conflict management. He took a decision. The son was expecting something, but he waited. Dad after a while, said:

- Son. Go to sleep. Son! Tomorrow  we will talk.

Now after fifteen years, followed that night, the son learn a great lesson of tolerance from his Dad. He still remember how his Dad understood and how he was gentle in his response. These days,  the son and Dad talk about that night. They became close friends as Dad and Son. The son told his friends, that he was expecting that Arab culture might interfere dealing violently with such a sin,  but Dad was listening and understanding unlike other parents,  from the Middle East,  on such incident. (604 words) www.askdryahya.com

This Crowded Night: And Other Stories

$15.95

“This Crowded Night brings the women of the New Testament Gospels to life, capturing the voices of mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives struggling to find their way–and perhaps their faith–in a society where women’s voices are too often pushed to the margins. “I’m always looking for ways to read the scriptures–its narratives and people–with clearer, wider eyes and ears. Elrena Evans book does this beautifully, bringing ancient but real people and events to vivid, enfleshed, believable life. Words are made flesh–and God comes near in these stories,” says Leslie Leyland Fields, Author, The Spirit of Food; and MFA faculty, Seattle Pacific University. “In these short stories, Elrena Evans joins a long, Christian literary and theological tradition that extends back to the times of the medieval mystery plays and likely before that. To the Bible stories’ bare contours, she adds earthly atmosphere, creaturely flesh, and very deep feeling. Her renderings of the familiar tales offer such startling insight and moving revelation that this work of devotion and imagination deserves to find a place beside the more conventional approaches to the Bible,” celebrates Julia Spicher Kasdorf, Author, Poetry in America”

How could a conservative Christian-an ordained minister with a beard, no less-be against not only Christianity, but theology, sacraments, and ethics as well? Yet that is the stance Peter Leithart takes in this provocative theological bricolage. Seeking to rethink evangelical notions of culture, church, and state, Leithart offers a series of short essays, aphorisms, and parables that challenge the current dichotomies that govern both Christian and non- Christian thinking about church and state, the secular and the religious. But his argument isn”t limited to being merely against. Leithart reveals a much larger vision of Christian society, defined by the stories, symbols, rituals, and rules of a renewed community-the city of God.
